Instructions
- Prepare the Apple Filling: In a medium saucepan, combine all Apple Filling ingredients. Cook over medium heat, stirring occasionally, until apples are tender, about 15-20 minutes. Let cool.
- Prepare the Cake: In a large bowl, whisk together the flour, baking soda, cinnamon, nutmeg, and cloves.
- In a separate bowl, cream together the molasses, shortening, and sugar. Beat in the egg, then gradually add the buttermilk.
- Gradually add the dry ingredients to the wet ingredients, mixing until just combined. Do not overmix.
- Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C).
- Divide the batter into 6 equal portions. On a lightly floured surface, roll each portion into a 9-inch circle.
- Place one cake layer in a 9-inch cake pan. Spread with 1/3 of the Apple Filling. Repeat with remaining cake layers and filling, ending with a cake layer on top.
- Bake for 30-35 minutes, or until golden brown. Let cool completely before serving.
