Instructions
  1. Prepare the Browned Butter: Melt 1/2 cup butter in a saucepan over medium heat. Continue cooking, swirling occasionally, until butter turns golden brown and has a nutty aroma. Remove from heat and let cool.
  2. Prepare the Apple Filling: In a medium saucepan, combine all Apple Filling ingredients. Cook over medium heat, stirring occasionally, until apples are tender, about 15-20 minutes. Let cool.
  3. Prepare the Cake: In a large bowl, whisk together the flour, baking soda, cinnamon, nutmeg, and cloves.
  4. In a separate bowl, cream together the molasses, browned butter, and sugar. Beat in the egg, then gradually add the buttermilk.
  5. Gradually add the dry ingredients to the wet ingredients, mixing until just combined. Do not overmix.
  6. Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C).
  7. Divide the batter into 6 equal portions. On a lightly floured surface, roll each portion into a 9-inch circle.
  8. Place one cake layer in a 9-inch cake pan. Spread with 1/3 of the Apple Filling. Repeat with remaining cake layers and filling, ending with a cake layer on top.
  9. Bake for 30-35 minutes, or until golden brown. Let cool completely before serving.
