Instructions
  1. Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and flour four 8-inch round cake pans.
  2. Brown 3/4 cup of butter in a saucepan until golden brown and fragrant. Let cool completely.
  3. In a large bowl, whisk together the Cake ingredients, including the cooled browned butter, until smooth. Divide batter evenly among the prepared pans.
  4. Bake for 12-15 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean. Let cool completely.
  5. In a medium saucepan, combine the Apple Filling ingredients. Bring to a boil, then reduce heat and simmer for 10-15 minutes, or until apples are tender. Let cool slightly.
  6. In a separate bowl, combine the Spiced Crumble ingredients. Cut the butter into the flour and sugar until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs.
  7. Place one cake layer on a serving plate. Spread with about 1/4 of the apple filling, then sprinkle with a portion of the spiced crumble. Repeat with remaining layers, ending with a cake layer on top. Sprinkle remaining crumble over the top.
  8. Dust the top with powdered sugar before serving.
