1 pound Day-old white bread-cubed
2 large Yellow onions-thinly sliced
2 tbsp Fresh sage-chopped
3 cups Milk
4 large Eggs

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease a 9x13 inch baking dish.
  2. Melt 2 tbsp of Butter in a large skillet over medium heat. Add Onion and cook, stirring occasionally, until caramelized, about 20-25 minutes. Stir in Sage during the last 5 minutes of cooking.
  3. In a large bowl, whisk together Milk, Eggs, Nutmeg, Salt, and Pepper.
  4. Arrange Bread cubes in the prepared baking dish. Spread the caramelized Onion and Sage mixture evenly over the bread.
  5. Pour the Custard mixture over the bread and onions, pressing down gently to ensure the bread is submerged. Sprinkle with Cheddar cheese.
  6. Dot the top with the remaining 2 tbsp of Butter.
  7. Bake for 45-50 minutes, or until golden brown and the custard is set. Let cool slightly before serving.
