  1. Prepare the Black Bean Patties: In a large bowl, mash the rinsed and drained black beans with a fork or potato masher until mostly smooth but still with some texture. Add the breadcrumbs, minced onion, ground cumin, smoked paprika, garlic powder, salt, and black pepper. Mix well to combine. Form the mixture into 4 equal-sized, loose balls, about -inch thick.
  2. Preheat a heavy-bottomed skillet or griddle over medium-high heat. Add 1 tablespoon of olive oil. Once hot, place two black bean balls onto the skillet, leaving space between them. Using a sturdy spatula or a burger press, firmly smash each ball down to about -inch thickness, creating lacy, irregular edges. Cook for 3-4 minutes until the edges are dark and crispy.
  3. Flip the patties, immediately place a slice of cheddar cheese on each, and cook for another 2-3 minutes, until the cheese is melted and the second side is browned. Repeat with the remaining two black bean balls.
  4. While the last patties are cooking, lightly toast the burger buns on the griddle or in a toaster until golden. Spread mayonnaise on the toasted buns.
  5. Assemble the burgers: Place a crispy black bean patty on the bottom bun, top with a tomato slice, lettuce leaf, and the top bun. Serve immediately.
