Drain Beans and place in a large pot with fresh Water and Ham Hock. Bring to a boil, then reduce heat and simmer for 2-3 hours, or until beans are tender.
While Beans are simmering, heat Vegetable Oil in a skillet over medium heat. Add Onion and cook until softened, about 5 minutes. Add Garlic and cook for 1 minute more.
Add the Onion and Garlic mixture to the Beans. Season with Salt and Pepper.
Preheat oven to 200°C (400°F).
In a large bowl, whisk together Cornmeal, Flour, Sugar, Baking Powder, Baking Soda, and Salt.
In a separate bowl, whisk together Buttermilk, Melted Butter, and Egg.
Add the wet ingredients to the dry ingredients and stir until just combined. Do not overmix.
Pour batter into a greased 20x20 cm (8x8 inch) baking dish and bake for 20-25 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean.
Serve Soup Beans hot with Cornbread.
